The News & Observer is the second-largest newspaper in North Carolina, after The Charlotte Observer. It is published by The McClatchy Co. in Raleigh, N.C., USA.

OverviewEdit

As of 2004, Sunday circulation was 211,735, making it 64th in the United States in largest reported circulation (for any day).

The paper's honors include the Pulitzer Prize gold medal for public service in 1996. The paper's earlier Pulitzers were awarded for criticism in 1989 and for commentary in 1983. The N&O was rated higher than many larger newspapers in a quality survey sponsored by the Columbia Journalism Review in 1999.

The News & Observer Publishing Co. also publishes newspapers in Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, eastern Wake County and Johnston County.

The paper was an online pioneer, starting Nando.net, one of the nation’s first internet service providers, in 1994.

The publisher is Orage Quarles, and the executive editor is Melanie Sill.

The paper has more than 1,200 full-time and part-time workers (about 250 in the newsroom) and a carrier force of about 750 independent contractors.
